Former Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Kovalenok appeared at a press conference devoted to unusual and anomalous phenomena in space.
The object split into two parts and had something like a bridge connecting those parts. The dumbbell-like object disappeared before the other cosmonaut was ready to photograph it. A strong radioactive emission was registered on Earth soon after the explosion of the mysterious object.

US chiefs can't be sued for 'terror torture'

The US Supreme Court said today that the FBI director and other officials of the Bush administration could not be sued over the alleged abuse of terror suspects in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

A 2003 Justice Department report found "significant problems" with the treatment of post-Sept. 11 detainees at the facility in Brooklyn, including physical abuse and mistreatment.

Natural disasters threaten to trigger widespread damage and distress in emerging economies, many of which are already on the brink because of the global recession, a United Nations body said on Sunday.

"Some low and middle-income countries which have experienced recent and rapid economic growth are more at risk from disaster because governance and construction standards have lagged and corruption is still rife," it said.

"Even in high income countries, problems persist as can be seen from last month's earthquake in Italy which destroyed a number of buildings constructed in modern times."
