Nations urge WHO to change criteria for pandemic

Fearing a swine flu pandemic declaration could spark mass panic and economic devastation, Britain, Japan, China and others asked the global body on Monday to tread carefully before raising its alert. Some cited the costly and potentially risky consequences, such as switching from seasonal to pandemic vaccine, even though the virus so far appears to be mild.

MILD?

The alert for swine flu is now at phase 5, which means the virus is spreading unchecked inside at least two countries in a single region.
Under the existing rules, phase 6 indicates outbreaks in at least two different regions of the world and that a pandemic is under way.

Noted!

A pandemic announcement would likely have severe economic consequences: It could trigger expensive trade and travel restrictions such as border closures, airport screenings and quarantines.

Also noted!

Chan warned that swine flu could pose a grave threat to humanity even though the fatality rate is low, with 76 known deaths out of 8,829 confirmed cases in 40 countries. That total does not include Greece, which reported its first confirmed case on Monday.

How many Americans die each year from influenza illness - Question on Cha Cha

Answer:
According to the CDC, the ordinary influenza virus kills 36,000 Americans per year.
The swine flu has only killed one person.

Quarantine USA! Oh ... people die of inFLUenzYa all over the globe?

Influenza fatalities per year

Something to put the swine flu outbreak in perspective: The regular seasonal flu has killed more than 13,000 people in the U.S. since January, and kills between 250,000 and 500,000 worldwide annually.

Obama to tap consumers for emission, mpg standards

Change ... yes: more "invisible" TAX!

Administration officials said consumers were going to pay an extra $700 for mileage standards that had already been approved.

The comprehensive Obama plan would add another $600 to the price of a vehicle, a senior administration official said.

The auto industry will be required to ramp up production of more fuel efficient vehicles on a much tighter timeline than originally envisioned.

It will be costly; (OFCOURSE _ AND WHO's TO PAY FOR ALL THAT SH.T?) the Transportation Department last year estimated that requiring the industry to meet 31.6 mpg by 2015 would cost nearly $47 billion.

But industry officials — many of whom are running companies on emergency taxpayer dollars — said Obama's plan would help them because they would not face multiple emissions requirements and would have more certainty as they develop their vehicles for the next decade.

Transform excuses

When you find yourself making an excuse, take a good, careful look at that excuse. What if you could transform it into a powerful reason for stepping forward?

Whatever serves as an excuse for not taking action can instead serve as a compelling reason to go ahead and act. It all depends on how you choose to see it.

Stop and listen to the excuses you make. You'll realize that they're only excuses because you cast them as such.

The events and circumstances in your life are what they are. What makes them meaningful to you is the way you choose to see them and respond to them.

There are plenty of perfectly reasonable excuses for not moving forward, if you decide to view them as such. Yet it is just as realistic to see those same factors as reasons to take action without delay.

Whatever may be stopping you could be pushing you forward. Are you ready now to achieve?
