Cruel and usual: US solitary confinement

The spectre of Bradley Manning lying naked and alone in a tiny cell at the Quantico Marine Base, less than 50 miles from Washington, DC, conjures up images of an American Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib, where isolation and deprivation have been raised to the level of torture.

In fact, the accused Wikileaker, now in his tenth month of solitary confinement, is far from alone in his plight. Every day in the US, tens of thousands of prisoners languish in "the hole".

SQUARE SUPER MOON:

Like so many other people around the world, James Helmericks of Alaska went outside on the evening of March 19th to watch the super perigee Moon rise in the east. "Imagine my surprise," he says, "when I saw that it was almost square." He took this picture from the Colville River Delta on Alaska's north slope:

A Nucleated Century

If you asked someone to draw an atom, he or she would probably draw something like a cockeyed solar system.

The sun - the nucleus - is at the center, and the planets - the electrons - orbit in several different planes.

The critical discovery in this atomic model emerged a century ago in a talk before the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society in March 1911 and a paper published soon after in the Philosophical Magazine.

Both were by Ernest Rutherford, who had won the 1908 Nobel Prize in Chemistry in part for his discovery of the alpha particle, which he later proved was the nucleus of a helium atom.

Japan quake loaded stress on fault closer to Tokyo

Experts are quick to point out that this doesn't mean a powerful earthquake is necessarily about to strike the Japanese capital.

Even if it did, the structure of the tectonic plates and fault lines around the city makes it unlikely that Tokyo would be hit by a quake anywhere near the intensity of the 9.0-magnitude one that struck March 11, said Roger Musson of the British Geological Survey.

Chavez says capitalism may have ended life on Mars

"I have always said, heard, that it would not be strange that there had been civilization on Mars."

"Careful! Here on planet Earth where hundreds of years ago or less there were great forests, now there are deserts. Where there were rivers, there are deserts," Chavez said, sipping from a glass of water.

Tokyo: Tap water not safe for infants

Levels of radioactive iodine in tap water at a water treatment center in downtown Tokyo measured 210 becquerels per liter of iodine-131 - more than twice the recommended limit of 100 becquerels per liter for infants, officials from the Tokyo Water Bureau said at a news conference.

Arab League condemns broad Western bombing campaign in Libya

Moussa said the Arab League's approval of a no-fly zone on March 12 was based on a desire to prevent Moammar Gaddafi's air force from attacking civilians and was not designed to endorse the intense bombing and missile attacks - including on Tripoli, the capital, and on Libyan ground forces - whose images have filled Arab television screens for two days.

Blasts heard in Tripoli

The US-led coalition claims they are targeting Gaddafi's air and ground forces, though political analysts argue that the main motive behind the military intrusion of the Western alliance is to ensure its access to vast oil reserves in the North African country.
