Bird Flu is back

Avian Flu or Bird Flu, A H5N1, is back with human cases of this highly pathogenic virus reported in the five countries this year. The good news is that A H5N1 has not yet managed to develop a mechanism to transmit easily from human to human. The bad news is that it might.

WikiLeaks boss Julian Assange turns on everyone

Mr Assange claimed The Guardian received leaked documents from Swedish authorities or "other intelligence agencies" intent on jeopardising his defence.

"The leak was clearly designed to undermine my bail application," he said. "Someone in authority clearly intended to keep Julian in prison."

TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE:

Earlier today, for the first time in 372 years, a total lunar eclipse occurred on the date of the northern winter solstice. Observers in North America were favored with an overhead view as the full Moon slipped in and out of Earth's eerie red shadow. Jonathan Sabin sends this picture from Ellenton, Florida:

QUIET SOLSTICE:

Today, Dec. 21, 2010, at 23:38 UT, the sun will shine straight down on the southern Tropic of Capricorn, marking the beginning of winter in the north and summer in the south. Astronomers call this event a "solstice." It's a quiet one; the Earth-facing side of the sun is blank (no sunspots) and solar activity is very low.
