Sixty-one Dutch nationals were killed in Wednesday morning's plane crash close to Tripoli airport in Libya, according to travel organisation ANWB.

The plane was carrying 93 passengers and 11 crew, Afriqiyah Airways said in a statement.

There was no immediate indication of the cause of the crash, but the security official said the plane exploded on landing.

"It exploded on landing and totally disintegrated," the official said.
