aliens like humansAliens visiting Earth will be just like humans, scientist claims

His lecture is part of a two-day conference at which experts will discuss how we might detect life on distant planets and what that could mean for society.

"Extra-terrestrials won't be splodges of glue ... they could be disturbingly like us, and that might not be a good thing - we don't have a great record."

The US space agency's search for alien life is based upon the mantra "follow the water", a strategy reflecting the fact that, on Earth, where there's water there's life.

Recent missions have [not equal]revealed ice on the moon and Mars.

Kellogg's to cut the salt in its cereals by a third following pressure from health watchdogs

The company has previously delayed the reduction of salt levels, claiming customers enjoy the taste it offers.

However, it has now bowed to pressure from the Government's Food Standards Agency and campaigning health groups to change its recipes.

Blair to face UK Iraq war inquiry

Tony Blair, the former British prime minister, is set to make a long-awaited appearance before an inquiry into Britain's involvement in the Iraq war.

Anti-war campaigners and the families of some of the 179 soldiers who have died in Iraq are expected to hold protests to coincide with Blair's public grilling on Friday.

"It's a pivotal day for him [Blair], for the British public and for Britain's moral authority in the world," Anthony Seldon, a political commentator and biographer of Blair, said.

"This is an enormous day and it goes way beyond him and his own reputation."

Blair's decision to go to war in 2003, which saw 45,000 British troops join the US-led invasion of Iraq, prompted huge protest in the UK, dividing the country as well as his own Labour Party.

BIGGEST FULL MOON OF THE YEAR:

This Friday night, if you think the Moon looks unusually big, you're right. It's the biggest full Moon of 2010. Astronomers call it a "perigee Moon," some 14% wider and 30% brighter than lesser full Moons of the year.

Johannes Kepler explained the phenomenon 400 years ago. The Moon's orbit around Earth is not a circle but an ellipse, with one side 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other. Astronomers call the point of closest approach "perigee," and that is where the Moon will be Friday night through Saturday morning.

A good time to look is Friday around sunset when the Moon is near the eastern horizon. At that time, illusion mixes with reality to produce a truly stunning view. For reasons not fully understood by psychologists, low-hanging Moons look unnaturally large when they beam through foreground objects such as buildings and trees. Why not let the "Moon illusion" amplify a full Moon that's extra-big to begin with? The swollen orb rising in the east may seem close enough to touch.

And what's that bright orange star right beside the Moon? MARS!

In a coincidence of celestial proportions, the Moon and Mars are having close encounters with Earth at the same time. Moreover, the two will spend Friday night gliding across the sky side-by-side.

Aurora Mystery Solved?

On Jan. 20, 2010, Per-Arne Mikalsen was photographing a vast aurora erupting over the northern Norwegian town of Andenes.

In one of the photographs taken by Mikalsen was an "object" that couldn't be identified. Although Mikalsen had taken several images at the same location, just one photo showed a mysterious green parachute-like object hanging with the main aurora.

cartoon spy eye spam in spaceWarning: space spam could annoy alients

EXPERTS warn that competing radio transmissions could be confusing to aliens and little more than space spam.

Few protested in 2008 when NASA beamed The Beatles song Across the Universe into deep space as a cosmic message of peace.

However the mix of other messages - which include images of genitals and appeals for money - may even be deemed as a threat by aliens.

European Space Agency (ESA) astrophysicist Malcolm Fridlund advised caution about drawing attention to ourselves.

"I'm not lying awake at night worrying about the overlords of the galaxy or anything like that," he said, "but when you don't know of anything that's out there, you should maybe be a little careful, you should know something about the (star) system first."
