AURORAS IN THE USA:
A coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth on Oct. 24th at approximately 1800 UT (2:00 pm EDT). The impact strongly compressed Earth's magnetic field, directly exposing geosynchronous satellites to solar wind plasma, and sparked an intense geomagnetic storm.
As night fell over North America, auroras spilled across the Canadian border into the contiguous United States.
WOW! Aurora sparks excitement across the country
Disturbances to Earth's magnetic field caused by the sun are rated from G1 - minor with aurora visible in along the borders of northern U.S. states - to G5, which can seriously affect power grids, cause damage to satellite components, blank out radio communications and send auroras all the way down to Florida and southern Texas.

Scientists investigate riddle of rapidly inflating volcano
Researchers from several U.S. universities say Uturuncu, which rises 6,000 meters in southwest Bolivia, is blowing up like a big balloon as its magma chamber grows around 10 times faster than normal.
Uturuncu is classed as a 'stratovolcano' - the most common type. But there is some concern that its rapid growth could indicate that a supervolcano is on its way.
