French President Nicolas Sarkozy has announced the creation of a multi-billion pound canal, in one of the biggest European engineering project in decades.

The route will link Paris to Northern France, joining a network which connects France to Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, including the commercially vital port of Rotterdam.

All this will be water: President Sarkozy (2nd R) and former environment minister Jean-Louis Borloo visit the site.

Earth has found a new companion that has joined its orbit around the sun, scientists have revealed.
It may not have the most romantic of names, but Asteroid 2010 SO16 could pursue Earth for anywhere between the next 120,000 to a million years.
And at a few hundred metres across, it is the largest space rock ever discovered so close to earth.
