Dubbed Leviathan Melvillei –after Herman Melville the author of the fictional Moby Dick – it has been described in the journal Nature as the largest fossil sperm whale ever found.

The three-metre fossilised skull was discovered by researchers in southern Peru in 2008.

Was Moby Dick a real whale?

Despite the yarn Reynolds claimed to have heard from the first mate of a whaler, legends about Mocha Dick circulated long after his reported death in the 1830s.
Sailors claimed that he wrecked whaleboats and killed whalers into the late 1850s, when he was finally killed by the crew of a Swedish whaling ship.

"Total Lindsey Oil Refinery, near Immingham, in North Lincolnshire, confirms that a fire occurred at 11.57am (1057 GMT) today, shortly followed by a small explosion," a company spokeswoman said.

US President Barack Obama has declared a state of emergency in Texas as tropical storm Alex gathers strength and oil workers are evacuated form rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.

Obama's action also authorizes the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate disaster relief efforts - in such areas as identifying, mobilizing and providing equipment and resources.
